The Art and Power of Paraphrasing: Bilateral Connection and Communication
Paraphrasing To Capture The Essence And Connect
A Standford GSB podcast with Matt Abrahams explores the power of paraphrasing to foster understanding, clarity, and connection.
"Paraphrasing is not simply repeating what someone says but rather capturing the essence of their message."
Paraphrasing involves identifying the “bottom line” and grasping the underlying message. Effective paraphrasing relies heavily on another crucial skill: listening clearly and intently.
Passive listening is very common and results in a superficial grasp of the communicated material that quickly moves on to judgments, evaluations, or the next statement. Surface-level listening does a disservice to the speaker and detracts from the potential richness of the conversation.
The benefits of being proficient at paraphrasing are manifold.
It offers a unique form of validation. The speaker feels not only heard but also understood.
It ensures that the message has been captured correctly. In scenarios where there might be ambiguities or nuances, paraphrasing assists in clarification and adjustment.
"In larger settings, paraphrasing ensures everyone understands the context or question being addressed." Paraphrasing acts as an inclusive tool, ensuring no one is left out.
"It allows the listener to think and strategize their next move in the conversation." Paraphrasing can act as a strategic pause, allowing one to gather one’s thoughts and respond more effectively.
Benefits are not only reactive but also directive. Paraphrasing can guide and control conversations, especially with long-winded or off-topic contributors. It can identify valuable talking points and refocus the dialogue. Paraphrasing, to my mind, is the most polite way to interrupt, and to regain control of communication."
From a strategic mindset, paraphrasing can reframe conversations and shift narratives. "I'm not advocating you do this; I am simply saying that paraphrasing is the manner through which you would do that if you want it."
While seemingly simple, paraphrasing holds transformative power in communication. By actively listening and distilling messages to their essence, we not only enhance understanding but also pave the way for richer, more inclusive conversations.
