Predictability in Leadership: How Consistency Became the Workplace's Rockstar
When Staying the Course is More Revolutionary Than a Rebellion
The CliftonStrengths for Leaders report identifies "consistency" as a foundational trait for leadership. Dr. Jaclynn Robinson notes, "If you have Consistency high, you are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same. You crave stable routines and clear rules and procedures everyone can follow."
Leaders embodying consistency are perceived as stabilizers who can be trusted to stay cool, calm, and collected in any crisis. Consistent leaders create an environment of stability, fairness, and predictability.
Within team dynamics, consistency is established through regular routines that offer predictability and stability. When everyone is aware of the rules and expectations, it creates an environment where all members feel equitably treated.
The seeming polarity between consistency and individualization must also be considered. While consistency highlights the importance of treating everyone fairly through stable routines and clear rules, individualization emphasizes individual needs and roles. Though seemingly contrary, consistency provides the framework that gives context to an individual’s place in the big picture.
Robinson summarizes this integral relationship, "Consistency can create that foundation of, ‘This is what we all need to abide by.’ And Individualization could say ‘OK, now let's figure out where you sit and where we can really play to your own unique talents and strengths.’"
Leaders need to recognize and harness the power of Consistency as a foundational pillar ensuring fairness, stability, and predictability in a diverse and dynamic workplace.
So What: Understand how consistently your actions and interactions are perceived across differing individuals, teams, and circumstances.
